Autumn in Cambridge

Written by

Visited Howard Giffiths and Jessica Royles, Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge and colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).  I gave a seminar and also attended a fascinating talk on vernalisation by Caroline Dean from the John Innes Centre (Enid MacRobbie Woman in Science Lecture).  At BAS I got very excited about the new reanalysis models for Antarctic climate that John Turner and colleagues are producing.

I meet up with Kevin Newsham who was sorting plants from his recent trip to Svalbard and saw his close encounter with a polar bear photos (Lucky Kevin).  Elise showed me the walk from Plant Sceinces to BAS and I also caught up with Helen Peat who is off to Bird Island next year.

We also found time to go to the Botanical gardens and walked along the Cam seeing Cambridge at its best, in the lovely autumnal light. We stayed in Gonville and Caius College in the attic rooms of a C15th building and attended Evensong at Kings College so I could see the fabulous chapel roof.
