Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Birmingham

Written by

Friday was my first day as a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, at the University of Birmingham.  I had a wonderful welcome both from Sue Gilligan and Sarah Jeffery and over lunch with academic staff from the Schools of Geography, Earth and Environmental SciencesBiosciences and Mathematics. The IAS aims to promote interdisciplinary research and it was great to see so many people connecting over lunch.

A number of the staff I met, including the Director Professor Rob MacKenzie, are involved in setting up the new Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR). I am looking forward to interacting with them all over the next few months as well as the fellow moss biologists in Biosciences. I am hoping I can learn a lot from the hydrologists too.

Sue presented me with a UoB Acme whistle which I tried out on Saturday.  Small but piercing - it will be really useful in Antarctica if I get lost in a blizzard or need to attract attention. I wonder if it works as a Skua deterrrent!
